University Application fee Waiver: How to Apply to Harvard University
Harvard is a good example of why applicants shouldn’t stop at the application-fee amount.
Harvard currently charges an application fee, but its admissions guidance says applicants who experience financial hardship can request an application fee waiver. Harvard also states that international applicants can request a waiver. Harvard International Applicants
For applicants using the Common Application, Harvard provides instructions for requesting the waiver through the application.
This is an important distinction.
Harvard is not simply saying that every applicant can submit for free. Rather, eligible applicants who cannot afford the fee have a route to request a waiver.
If Harvard is on your university list, don’t let the application fee alone convince you that applying is impossible.
Check the official admissions instructions first.
How to Apply to MIT Without Paying the Application Fee
MIT provides another example of a university where an application fee doesn’t necessarily mean every applicant has to pay it.
MIT’s admissions office currently lists a $75 application fee and explains that fee waivers are available to both domestic and international applicants. Applicants can request the waiver through the application. MIT application fee and fee waiver information
MIT also explains that requesting a fee waiver does not negatively affect an applicant’s admission chances.
That is useful information because some students hesitate to request financial assistance because they worry that it might somehow make their application look weaker.
MIT’s published guidance addresses that concern directly.
How to Apply to Stanford Without Paying the Application Fee
Stanford’s application process follows a similar principle.
Stanford currently charges an application fee for first-year applicants, but eligible applicants can request a fee waiver through the application. The university refers applicants to the applicable Common Application fee-waiver guidelines and other recognized waiver processes. Stanford Application Fee and Fee Waiver
For an international student, this is exactly why checking the official university page matters.
A search result might simply tell you:
Stanford — $100 application fee.
That’s incomplete information.
The more useful question is:
“Does Stanford have a fee-waiver option for someone in my situation?”
That second question could save you the application fee.
How to Apply to Yale Without Paying the Application Fee
Yale also provides application fee-waiver options.
Its admissions information explains that qualifying applicants can use fee waivers through accepted application platforms. Yale also provides routes for applicants using programs such as QuestBridge where applicable. Yale Undergraduate Admissions
Again, the key word is qualifying.
The fact that a university accepts fee waivers doesn’t mean every applicant automatically receives one.
Read the eligibility requirements before submitting your application.
