Foreign Universities Offering Fully Funded Master’s Programs for Asian Students

Fully Funded Master’s Opportunities at the University of Tokyo

Japan is another destination worth considering, particularly through the Asian Development Bank–Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP).

The University of Tokyo participates in ADB-JSP through several graduate programs.

For example, its Graduate School of Frontier Sciences currently lists ADB-JSP opportunities across areas including materials science, advanced energy, biosciences, environmental studies, international studies and sustainability science.

The University’s School of International Health also offers a two-year master’s pathway under ADB-JSP for eligible students from ADB developing member countries. Its published information describes coverage including travel, entrance and tuition fees, a monthly subsistence allowance and other allowances.

This route is particularly relevant to students from eligible Asian countries because the ADB-JSP is specifically designed for nationals of ADB borrowing member countries.

The ADB currently lists countries including India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Vietnam among eligible countries, alongside other participating economies.

There are conditions, though.

Applicants generally need a bachelor’s degree, relevant professional experience and admission to an approved master’s program. ADB also states that candidates should normally be no more than 35 years old and must agree to return to their home country after completing the program.

Fully Funded ADB-Japan Master’s Programs Across Asia

One thing students sometimes miss is that ADB-JSP is not limited to one Japanese university.

The program currently works with 27 designated institutions across Asia and the Pacific, including 17 institutions in Japan.

The scholarship can cover:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Monthly subsistence and housing allowance
  • Books and instructional materials
  • Medical insurance
  • Travel expenses
  • Potential research or thesis support

The exact academic programs and admission requirements vary by institution.

The ADB also explains that students must first seek admission through a participating institution. There is no separate general application to ADB before university admission.

That makes the process slightly different from simply searching for a scholarship and applying independently.

You first need to identify an eligible program, understand its admission requirements, and then request consideration for ADB-JSP through the designated institution.
