How to Approach Professors About RA Opportunities
If your target is a research assistantship, then contacting professors can be worthwhile.
1. But don’t send 100 identical emails.
Research first.
Your email can briefly introduce:
• Who you are
• What program you’re applying for
• Your research interest
• Why their work caught your attention
• Your relevant experience
• Whether they expect to supervise or fund graduate students
For example:
Subject: Prospective Graduate Student Interested in [Research Area]
2. Keep the message short.
Attach your CV if appropriate and, where relevant, include a concise research proposal or writing sample.
Don’t send a huge autobiography.
A professor may receive dozens of emails from prospective students. Make yours easy to understand.
What If the Professor Does not Reply?
Then Don’t panic.
No response doesn’t mean that your profile is weak.
Professors may be:Teaching
* Travelling
* Reviewing papers
* On research leave
* Not recruiting students
* Without available funding
A polite follow-up after a reasonable period can be appropriate.
And do not build your entire application around one professor.
Identify several good-fit faculty members and programs.
