Month 7: Find Study Abroad Scholarships and Funding
Now ask the question that many applicants leave dangerously late:
How exactly am I going to pay for this?
Don’t calculate tuition alone.
Your financial plan may need to account for:
- Tuition
- Accommodation
- Food
- Transportation
- Health insurance
- Visa-related costs
- Flights
- Books and supplies
- Personal expenses
Search for university scholarships as well as external funding.
Create another deadline list because scholarship deadlines may not match admission deadlines.
A university can admit you and still be financially unrealistic.
That distinction matters.
Month 6: Write Your Study Abroad Personal Statement and Essays
This is where many applications become complicated.
Students sometimes think their essay needs to sound like a speech delivered by a professor.
It does not have to.
It needs to sound like a thoughtful version of you.
Explain:
- Why you chose the subject
- What sparked your interest
- What you have learned so far
- What experiences influenced your goals
- Why the program makes sense for you
- What you hope to do with the opportunity
Avoid filling every paragraph with impressive vocabulary.
Specific experiences are usually more memorable than generic claims about being “passionate” and “hardworking.”
For UK undergraduate applications, UCAS requires applicants to include a personal statement and a reference as part of the application process.
Month 5: Finalize Your Study Abroad Applications
By now, your application should be taking shape.
This is the time to review everything as if you were someone seeing it for the first time.
Check:
- Your name and personal details
- Academic history
- Course selection
- Essays
- References
- Test scores
- Transcripts
- Application fees
- Scholarship forms
- Supporting documents
Common App similarly recommends gathering materials, understanding each college’s requirements, planning essays and working with recommenders before submission.
So, you don’t assume that submitting one U.S. university application means the next one will require exactly the same information.
Each institution can have its own requirements and deadlines.
Month 4: Submit Your Study Abroad Applications
This is the month where preparation becomes real.
Before you press “submit,” perform one final check.
Then submit before the deadline, not at the deadline.
That distinction matters.
For the 2027 UK undergraduate cycle, for example, UCAS says applications can be submitted from 1 September 2026. The equal-consideration deadline is 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses, while the deadline for most undergraduate courses is 13 January 2027.
These dates are examples, not universal deadlines.
Your course may have a different date.
Your university may have additional requirements.
So, Always check the official application system and university website.
