Can You Extend Your Stay in Australia?
This is where many travelers make an important mistake.
You generally cannot simply extend your existing ETA or Visitor visa as if you were adding extra months to the same permission.
If you want to remain in Australia longer, you may need to apply for another visa.
Whether you can apply for another visa while you are already in Australia can depend on the conditions attached to your current visa.
For example, some visas may include a “No Further Stay” condition, which can prevent the holder from applying for certain further visas while in Australia.
For that reason, you should check the exact conditions attached to your visa before assuming that you can remain longer.
Can a U.S. Citizen Leave Australia and Come Back for Another Three Months?
An ETA can permit multiple entries during its validity period.
However, this should not be misunderstood as a strategy for permanently living in Australia through repeated short visits.
Australia’s Department of Home Affairs states that travelers who spend long periods in Australia or make frequent visits may be questioned about the purpose of their travel. If authorities determine that a person is not a genuine visitor, their ETA may be cancelled.
In other words:
Leaving Australia briefly and repeatedly returning is not a guaranteed way to keep living in the country as a visitor.
Border and immigration authorities can consider the pattern and purpose of your travel.
