A U.S. citizen travelling on a U.S. passport is from a visa waiver country.
This means Americans can generally travel to New Zealand without applying for a traditional Visitor Visa before travelling, provided they meet the requirements for visa-waiver travel.
However, Americans generally need to obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before travelling.
If you are granted entry permission on arrival, a U.S. visitor can generally stay in New Zealand for:
Up to 3 months at a time.
There is also an important longer-term limit:
You can generally spend no more than 6 months in New Zealand during any 12-month period using visa-waiver travel.
So while your individual visit may be up to three months, New Zealand also looks at the total amount of time you have spent in the country.
