Can You Work After a PGD?
This is where you need to be particularly careful in 2026.
A post-graduate diploma does not automatically mean you wil receive a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
For many non-degree programs, PGWP eligibility depends on the program being at a PGWP-eligible institution and, for students affected by the newer rules, the program’s field of study. Language requirements also apply.
The Canadian government currently states that graduates of eligible non-degree college/polytechnic programs generally need to meet a CLB 5/NCLC 5 language requirement, and students whose study-permit application was submitted on or after November 1, 2024 may need to graduate from an eligible field of study.
So before paying a deposit, ask the school:
1. “Is this specific program currently PGWP eligible?”
2. Then verify it independently through the Canadian government’s official information.
How Long Can You Work Afterward?
For eligible programs that are at least 8 months but less than 2 years, a PGWP may generally be issued for up to the same length as the program.
For eligible programs of 2 years or longer, a PGWP may be issued for up to 3 years.
And that doesn’t mean that every diploma automatically qualifies for those periods.
