4. Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarship
The Heinrich Böll Foundation supports international graduate students and PhD candidates who want to study in Germany.
International applicants can apply for master’s or doctoral funding, with preference given to applicants from DAC countries in relevant cases.
For the 2026 cycle, the foundation lists an application period from July 15 to September 1, 2026 for the fall round.
One thing you should pay attention to is the language requirement: international applicants generally need German at B2/DSH II level.
So this is one scholarship where starting your German preparation early can really help.
5. Friedrich Ebert Foundation Scholarship
The Friedrich Ebert Foundation offers scholarships to international students from regions including Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Applicants need strong academic performance and must demonstrate social or political involvement.
International students can receive €992 per month, with health-insurance support and additional support in certain circumstances.
There is also a separate doctoral scholarship offering €1,500 per month, plus a contribution toward statutory health insurance.
The catch is that applicants generally need good German-language skills, even when their academic programme is taught in English.
